Preparation for birth Most women would like to give birth without perineal injury in the form of an episiotomy or a tear. You can increase your chance of an intact perineum by using the inflatable silicone balloon of the Epi-No Delphine in the last 3 weeks of pregnancy to gradually stretch the muscles of the birth canal. You can also increase your confidence in the sensation of giving birth and subsequently reduce the length of the second stage of labour. After completing gentle perineal stretching you relax your pelvic floor muscles and allow the inflated balloon to be expelled from the vagina. In addition to the stretching exercises, the Epi-No Delphine Plus with biofeedback gauge can be used early in pregnancy and from six weeks postnatally to exercise the pelvic floor muscles to improve muscle tone.

Which Epi-No to purchase? Essentially, all the models work the same allowing one to ‘practice’ for birth – stretching the perineum and to gain confidence in the correct pushing technique to expel the balloon. The Epi-No Delphine is the most basic model and is recommended for antenatal birth training. The Delphine Plus has a biofeedback gauge to monitor the strength of the muscle tone and can be used for birth training as well as postnatal pelvic floor strengthening. The Epi-No Libra is targeted at women seeking to strengthen pelvic floor muscles and reduce stress incontinence, not for antenatal use. |
